Shillong, Oct 29: Former Rangsakona legislator Zenith Sangma on Wednesday officially rejoined the Congress after quitting the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). Upon his return, he launched a scathing attack on the ruling NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, accusing it of widespread corruption and misgovernance.
Addressing media persons after being formally re-inducted into the party, Sangma said he had “consciously decided to return to the Congress, my old family,” to fight against what he described as a corrupt regime that is “destroying Meghalaya.”
“The prevailing situation across Meghalaya and the country as a whole — both under the state and central governments — is alarming. They have been destroying the nation,” Sangma asserted.
A long-time Congress member for over two decades, Sangma alleged that the current government has crippled key sectors such as power, education, and health through rampant corruption.
“In every department, because of corruption, this present government is destroying the state,” he said.
Defending his own record, Sangma maintained that his tenure as a minister was clean and transparent.
“If the present government investigates the departments I handled, I have nothing to fear. Not a single dot of public fund was misused,” he claimed.
On his brother Dr. Mukul Sangma’s continued association with the TMC, Zenith said politics and family are separate matters.
“In politics, there is no family. What matters is the welfare of the people,” he stated, refusing to comment on TMC’s leadership.
Explaining his decision to return, Sangma said the Congress remains a pan-Meghalaya and pan-India party with a presence in every corner of the state. He pledged to work with full dedication under the party’s leadership.
When asked about his new role, Sangma described himself as a “true soldier of the party.”
“Whatever assignment the leadership gives me, I will carry it out sincerely,” he said, adding that the party’s programmes and plans will be announced in due course.
