SHILLONG, Oct 30: A delegation of tourism societies from the Darrang area on Thursday met Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong, urging the state government to constitute a fact-finding committee to probe and address the issue of erosion and pollution of the Umngot River, allegedly caused by ongoing construction under the Shillong–Dawki road project.
The delegation, led by Dalloi of Elaka Darrang Pyrwa Lymba, included representatives from the Darrang Tourism Promotion and Development Society, Shnongpdeng Tourism Development Society, and Dawki Tourism Development Society.
In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Chief Minister, the tourism societies expressed deep concern over the visible discoloration of the Umngot River, which has long been known as one of Meghalaya’s most pristine and scenic tourist destinations. The groups noted that the pollution has adversely impacted both the river’s natural beauty and the livelihoods of local residents who rely heavily on tourism.
“While we have some indications of the possible sources of this pollution, we trust in the wisdom and commitment of the Government to conduct a thorough investigation and take urgent remedial action,” the memorandum stated. “Your kind attention and action on this matter will go a long way in safeguarding the livelihood of the local people and preserving the ecological and tourism value of the Umngot River.”
The delegation also raised the issue of road erosion, claiming that ongoing construction activities, particularly along the Shillong–Dawki stretch, have caused destruction of riverbanks, exacerbating environmental degradation in the region.
In addition to pollution concerns, the delegation requested a revision of the daily road closure schedule at Laitlyngkot, which currently restricts movement from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They suggested modifying the closure hours to 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. to facilitate smoother tourist traffic during the winter season.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong reportedly assured the delegation that the government would examine the matter and explore appropriate solutions. He also commended the enthusiasm of the tourism stakeholders and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to support tourism development in the region.
The meeting was also attended by former Amlarem MLA Stephanson Mukhim, who expressed support for the delegation’s concerns.
