SHILLONG, Nov 5: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has slammed the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA) for blocking the Shillong Bypass, calling the protest illegal and disruptive.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has written to the Deputy Commissioners of East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi, urging immediate action to remove unauthorised check gates and barriers set up by various departments along the Bypass, saying they violate highway norms and obstruct traffic.

Tynsong clarified that the government cannot enforce a uniform freight rate for trucks transporting goods outside Meghalaya, as inter-state rates fall under Central laws. He said cement plants in Jaintia Hills have already agreed to follow the state-notified rates for transport within Meghalaya.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the blockade, and authorities have been instructed to stay alert to prevent further disturbances. Tynsong urged protesting groups to opt for dialogue instead of blocking highways.
