Shillong, November 7, 2025 The ancient hills of Smit once again came alive with colour, rhythm, and reverence as the annual Nongkrem Dance — also known as the Pomblang Syiem — unfolded at the sacred Iing Syiem Sad. Widely regarded as one of the most important cultural festivals of the Khasi people, the celebration continues to stand as a powerful symbol of community, identity, and devotion.
Speaking to the media, the Syiem of Hima Khyrim, Paiem Dr. Balajied Sing Syiem, expressed satisfaction over the smooth and well-coordinated preparations for this year’s festivities. He emphasised that the Nongkrem Dance goes far beyond its visual splendour, carrying with it profound cultural and spiritual meaning.
“The Nongkrem Dance is not just a form of entertainment. It is a reminder of who we are and what our ancestors have handed down to us. It strengthens our bond as a people and showcases the richness of our culture and heritage,”
said Paiem Dr. Balajied.

He also acknowledged the collective effort that contributed to the event’s success, praising the cooperation of village authorities, local leaders, and the energetic participation of the youth who helped maintain peace and order throughout the celebration.
Rooted deeply in tradition, the Nongkrem Dance is an integral royal ceremony of the Hima Khyrim State, celebrating unity among clans and reaffirming age-old customs. The festival draws thousands of spectators from across Meghalaya and beyond, all eager to witness the vibrant dances, ceremonial rituals, and the timeless expression of Khasi pride.
As the drums echoed across Smit and dancers adorned in traditional attire performed with grace and devotion, this year’s Nongkrem Dance once again reaffirmed its place as a cultural treasure — a living legacy that continues to inspire and unite the Khasi people.
