Shillong, Nov 12: Talent is a precious gift from God, but it can also be nurtured through proper training and education. In today’s world, skill development and vocational learning have become vital components of modern education, particularly for young students seeking self-reliance.
Reflecting this vision, Bellefonte Community College, Lumshyiap, run by the FMA Sisters of the Salesian Order, organised a Skill Development Exhibition at Lumshyiap Market to showcase the creativity and craftsmanship of its students to the local community.
Established around four years ago, the college has been dedicated to producing skilled, capable, and self-sufficient youth. Principal Sister Helen Puweiñ said the exhibition was designed to highlight the institution’s mission of empowering young people through practical, hands-on vocational education.
The exhibition featured a wide range of handmade products, including handicrafts, home décor items, tailoring and fashion designs, food processing samples, and digital media works. The showstopper, however, was the impressive collection of garments designed and stitched by students — which many visitors remarked were of “company-like” quality, rivaling professional brands.
Residents and shopkeepers from Lumshyiap thronged the exhibition, visiting stalls, interacting with students, and lauding their creativity, innovation, and attention to detail.

Teachers of the college noted that such exhibitions bridge classroom learning with real-life applications, motivating students to consider entrepreneurship and contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
The Rangbah Shnong, Bah A.K. Khongphai, along with members of the Lumshyiap Dorbar Shnong, attended the event and commended the students for their talent and perseverance. They also encouraged the institution to continue organising similar programmes to inspire the youth and strengthen community engagement.
Expressing gratitude, Sister Helen thanked the Dorbar Shnong Lumshyiap for their constant support and cooperation, and acknowledged the faculty for their commitment to student development. She also extended appreciation to the Meghalaya State Skills Development Society (MSSDS) for providing opportunities and technical support to enhance vocational learning.
A private, non-governmental and non-political institution, Bellefonte Community College continues to uphold its mission of empowering underprivileged youth — particularly women — through job-oriented and self-employment training programmes. It remains a shining example of holistic education that fosters skill, self-reliance, and community development in the North East.
