SHILLONG, NOV 21: Minister in-charge of PHE, Soil and Water Conservation, Housing and other departments, Marcuise N. Marak, on Friday said Meghalaya is witnessing a visible transformation in infrastructure and an 11% improvement in financial growth under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the newly constructed Williamnagar meat and fish market, along with the extension office building of the Williamnagar Municipal Board (WMB).
Marak praised CEO Ripamchi N. Sangma and WMB Chairman Benedick K. Sangma for successfully implementing the project, enabling vendors to conduct business with improved hygiene, safety, and dignity.
The minister further announced that the government is planning to construct a dedicated vegetable market in Williamnagar to support local farmers, along with a new slaughterhouse, for which land has already been identified.
“Considering the challenges faced by farmers in selling their produce on market days, the government is planning to construct a vegetable market at Williamnagar… A slaughterhouse will also be constructed soon,” he said, urging meat and fish vendors to cooperate in maintaining proper waste management.
Deputy Commissioner RP Marak underscored the importance of designated sale points, reiterating that the High Court has prohibited roadside sale of meat and fish. He said Williamnagar, backed by a comprehensive master plan, is positioned for rapid development in the coming years.
Superintendent of Police Stephen Rynjah urged vendors to maintain cleanliness and ensure a safe environment within the market premises, adding that authorities are ready to assist them against anti-social activities.
