SHILLONG, Nov 27: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Thursday launched a six-month certificate course aimed at upskilling in-service untrained teachers from pre-primary to Class II, stressing the importance of continuous professional development in a rapidly evolving education environment.
Speaking at the launch programme held at the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT) in Nongrimmaw, Laitumkhrah, Rymbui said the education system today demands more than basic qualifications.
“We need not only qualification, but also training. The education system today is very dynamic—we must be ready for any changes,” he stated.
Rymbui highlighted the crucial role of DERT as the state’s nodal agency for teacher education, particularly following the Supreme Court’s September 1, 2025 ruling that made the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) compulsory.
He said that while TET is now mandatory, in-service teachers must also be equipped with training to meet new standards.
“If in two years the Supreme Court does not review or modify its judgment, the government must find ways to support in-service teachers by training and making them qualified. The role of the Education Department and DERT is very important,” he added.
Calling for a mission-mode approach, the minister acknowledged that the introduction of the course was long overdue but praised the progress made, noting that two new training courses had been introduced within the last month. He also thanked the state Cabinet for approving the Meghalaya Teachers Training Academy, which will work closely with DERT.
Rymbui emphasized the need to keep pace with global academic trends through updated curricula, modern pedagogical methods, and integration of emerging technology.
“AI is the way forward. Whether we like it or not, we must integrate AI into the curriculum,” he said, urging DERT to explore ways to introduce AI concepts from Class III onwards, despite infrastructure limitations.
He reaffirmed that the government, led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, is committed to educational reform and to ensuring adequate teacher placement in schools based on requirements.
Thursday’s event was attended by DERT Director R.S. Manners, special guest R. Rapthap, department officials and invited guests. During the programme, the minister formally launched the Certificate Course on Foundational Stage for Untrained In-Service Teachers of Meghalaya.
