Shillong, December 17: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday staged a protest at the Congress Bhavan, alleging systematic misuse of central investigative agencies by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to target the Gandhi family and intimidate political opposition.
Addressing party workers during the protest, MPCC leaders cited the recent order of a Special Court at Rouse Avenue, New Delhi, which declined to take cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate’s prosecution complaint in the National Herald case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The court reportedly cited the absence of a valid predicate offence as the reason for its decision.
Chairman of the MPCC Social Media Department, Lang Kupar War, said the court order amounted to a rejection of what he described as a politically motivated case at the preliminary stage, highlighting the limitations of prosecutions allegedly driven by vendetta.
The Congress reiterated that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have committed no wrongdoing and claimed that repeated legal setbacks indicate the case lacked substantive legal grounds. The party accused the BJP of following a pattern of conducting raids, publicising allegations, and encouraging what it termed “media trials” without sufficient evidence.
In a statement, the MPCC reaffirmed its faith in the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary, asserting that it would continue to confront such challenges through legal and democratic means. The party also said it would focus on issues affecting the public, including unemployment, rising prices, agrarian distress, and concerns over the weakening of democratic institutions.
The BJP has not issued an immediate response to the allegations raised during the protest.
