Shillong, January 19: The Dorbar Shnong Golflink has raised serious concerns over frequent power outages in the locality, blaming inadequate and overloaded transformers for causing prolonged inconvenience to residents.
Speaking to the media, the Rangbah Shnong of Golflink, Bah Michael H.E.K, said repeated power cuts have disrupted daily life and adversely affected essential services. He pointed out that interruptions in electricity supply have also impacted the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, as water pumping operations come to a halt during outages.
Bah Michael said residents are facing persistent problems due to load shedding and an acute shortage of transformers. Many of the existing transformers, he added, are old and no longer capable of handling the growing electricity demand in the area.
He strongly criticised the Power Department, Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), alleging that while it continues to collect electricity bills regularly, it has failed to provide reliable and efficient power supply.
“The department is quick to collect revenue from the public, but fails to deliver adequate electricity. Where is the money being utilised?” he questioned.
The Rangbah Shnong further informed that the Dorbar Shnong Golflink had provided land to the Power Department nearly four years ago for the installation of new transformers. However, no transformers have been installed to date. He said the shnong authorities have not been informed whether the delay is due to a lack of funds or non-availability of equipment.
According to Bah Michael, the shortage of transformers remains the primary cause of unstable electricity supply in the locality, resulting in frequent power failures and irregular service.
He urged MeECL to take immediate and serious steps to install additional transformers and improve power management to prevent further hardship to residents. He also stated that the Dorbar Shnong Golflink will continue to pursue the matter until the State Government and the Power Department jointly address the long-standing electricity issues faced by the people.
