Shillong, January 21: Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai on Thursday said the proposed flyover from Mahavira Park to Barik Point is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in Shillong.
Shullai informed reporters that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong will convene a special meeting after Republic Day to review infrastructure-related issues raised with central ministers by a state BJP delegation led by him.
He said the delegation met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to discuss matters including relocation of the Dalit Sikh community, implementation of building bye-laws, and acquisition of defence land required for the flyover project. According to Shullai, Singh assured personal intervention, while Gadkari expressed support for land allotment.
Other issues discussed included development of a playground in the cantonment area, construction of a hawker market, and preservation of indigenous culture at Mawlai.
Shullai said he is optimistic that the issues would be resolved within six to seven months. He also met the Director of Defence Estate to expedite approval of building bye-laws for the Shillong Cantonment Board, enabling construction of G+2 structures in the area.
