SHILLONG, Jan 28: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has urged the state government to take steps to revive and preserve the historic name and cultural legacy of Khyndailad by constructing a dedicated cultural centre at the iconic location in Shillong.
In a letter submitted on Wednesday to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar, HYC stressed the need to safeguard Khyndailad’s identity as a symbol of Khasi heritage amid rapid urbanisation.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem stated that Khyndailad should not be reduced to a forgotten or symbolic name, but recognised as a living representation of Khasi history and culture in the heart of the state capital.
“‘Khyndailad’ deserves to be remembered not as a forgotten name, but as a living symbol of Khasi heritage in the heart of Shillong,” Synrem wrote, urging the government to direct the concerned departments to conduct a feasibility study and initiate the project in consultation with local stakeholders, traditional bodies, and organisations.
According to HYC, the proposed cultural centre would serve multiple purposes, including preservation of cultural identity, promotion of local artistes, encouragement of entrepreneurship, and the development of sustainable tourism.
The envisioned centre would feature an open performance space, designated stalls for traditional foods and indigenous crafts, and interpretative installations explaining the historical and cultural significance of Khyndailad.
HYC believes that such an initiative would not only honour the past but also generate livelihoods and instil a sense of pride among the people.
“Such a centre would enhance Shillong’s cultural tourism appeal, transforming Khyndailad into a living cultural monument rather than a congested commercial zone,” Synrem added.
