Sobhan Acharya (January 31, 2026)
Shillong, Feb 6: Sobhan Acharya, a long-time resident of Shillong, passed away on January 31, 2026, following complications arising from pneumonia. He was undergoing treatment at TriLife Hospital, Bengaluru, where he faced the illness with courage despite sustained medical efforts.
An alumnus of Shillong’s educational institutions, Acharya was formerly a resident of Bhagyakul, Laitumkhrah. He served in the Defence Accounts Department under the Ministry of Defence (Finance), during which he held postings in Dimapur, Kohima, Imphal, Kolkata, Panagarh, Gopalpur-on-Sea, and Narengi, Guwahati. He retired from service at the office of the Controller of Defence Accounts, Guwahati.
Acharya was the eldest son of late Shelley Acharya and late Prof. Salil Krishna Acharya, the founding Principal of Shillong Commerce College (then Commerce College, Shillong). Prof. Acharya was also an early researcher who had conceptualised the inter-linking of the Brahmaputra and the Ganga to enhance economic activity in the Northeast more than six decades ago.
Remembered for his affable nature, sharp wit, and warmth, Sobhan Acharya was widely respected by colleagues, friends, and acquaintances. A keen traveller and an avid reader, he later settled in Kolkata before moving to Bengaluru after retirement.
He is survived by his sister, Sangeeta Borooah of Bengaluru, and his brother, Sandeep Acharya of Delhi.
The Shraddha ceremony will be held on February 9, 2026, in Bengaluru.
