Shillong, February 16: The Meghalaya Power Department has significantly reduced its long-pending dues to the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Tripura, bringing the outstanding amount down to approximately ₹40 crore from a peak of ₹565 crore.
Official sources said the liabilities had accumulated over several years due to delayed payments for power procurement and financial stress within the state’s electricity distribution system. The dues reportedly began mounting during 2017–2018.
During the tenure of then Power Minister James K. Sangma, outstanding payments started to rise. Subsequent efforts to address the growing liabilities were undertaken when the power portfolio was held by A. T. Mondal between 2022 and 2025.
At present, officials credit Managing Director Sanjaye Goel with accelerating financial reforms within the department. Measures implemented under his leadership include clearing accumulated power purchase liabilities, improving revenue collection, reducing dependence on borrowings, and enforcing stricter financial discipline.
The reduction of dues from ₹565 crore to around ₹40 crore is being viewed as a major financial correction for the state’s power sector. Authorities said the remaining amount is expected to be cleared in the near future.
Officials added that the settlement of outstanding payments will help ease fiscal pressure on the state government and strengthen coordination with central power suppliers. The move is also expected to improve the department’s capacity to ensure uninterrupted power supply and support ongoing infrastructure development initiatives across Meghalaya.
