Shillong, March 2: In a major outreach initiative aimed at encouraging youth participation in the armed forces, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has announced a recruitment rally in Shillong, marking a focused drive in Meghalaya. The rally for male candidates will be held on March 20, while female candidates will appear on March 22, 2026.
The announcement was made by Air Force officer A. Murali Dharan during an awareness and career guidance programme at Soso Tham Auditorium on Monday. The event was organised by the East Khasi Hills district administration in collaboration with the Air Force Recruitment Cell to provide information and counselling to Khasi youth aspiring to join the defence services.
Addressing participants, Murali Dharan described the initiative as the first time the Air Force has conducted a recruitment rally with a specific focus on Meghalaya. He said the objective is to expand employment opportunities for youth in the state and increase representation from the region in the armed forces.
He clarified that the recruitment process will be conducted directly at the designated ground, eliminating the need for online applications.
Speaking to reporters, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner R.M. Kurbah said recruitment drives have been organised annually since 2023, resulting in more than 500 youths joining various armed forces. She added that over 300 youths were recently recruited into the Border Security Force (BSF).
Kurbah noted a growing interest among young people in pursuing careers in the armed forces. Over 900 youths registered for Monday’s awareness programme, with many parents also in attendance. She described military service as a noble profession that ensures national safety and security and encouraged eligible candidates to consider the opportunity.
Army officer Viney Kumar informed participants that the age eligibility ranges from 17½ to 22 years, with educational qualifications from Class 8 to Class 12. He stated that selected candidates will receive structured training and benefits under various entry categories.
He added that registration for the recruitment process has commenced and will remain open until April 1, 2026. Recruitment categories include the Agnipath Scheme under which candidates can apply as Agniveers after completing Class 8, while Class 12 graduates may apply for technical roles and positions such as nursing assistants for women.
Director of the Zila Sainik Board, Shabestian Marbaniang, welcomed the initiative and said it would significantly benefit aspiring youth in the state. A retired Lieutenant General, Marbaniang emphasised the importance of discipline, physical fitness, and dedication for those seeking to serve in the military.
He underscored that recruitment into the Air Force follows a transparent and merit-based selection process, assessing candidates on ability, perseverance, and commitment. Those selected, he said, will undergo professional training in aviation, technology, and leadership, equipping them for both military service and long-term career growth.
Marbaniang concluded by stating that joining the Air Force is not merely a career choice but an opportunity to serve the nation while building a secure and meaningful future.
