Shillong, March 4: The Meghalaya unit of the National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday observed the 10th death anniversary of its founder, Purno Agitok Sangma, at the party’s state headquarters in Polo, Shillong, with senior leaders reaffirming their commitment to his political vision.
State NPP president and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong led party members in offering floral tributes and described the late leader as a “visionary chosen by God” who consistently prioritised the interests of tribal communities across Meghalaya and the North East.
Addressing party workers, Tynsong reflected on his personal and political association with Sangma, particularly during the latter’s tenure as Member of Parliament from Tura. He said regular interactions in New Delhi broadened his perspective beyond state politics.
“Meeting him frequently made me realise that our responsibility was not limited to Meghalaya but extended to safeguarding the interests of tribals across the country,” Tynsong said. He recalled Sangma’s advice to work diligently to protect constitutional safeguards and indigenous rights.
Emphasising the party’s ideological foundation, Tynsong said Sangma’s call for “One North East, one tribal voice in India” remains central to the NPP’s mission. He asserted that protecting tribal identity and upholding constitutional provisions for indigenous communities would continue to guide the party’s political agenda.
NPP national working president and former Home Minister James K Sangma said the most meaningful tribute to his father lies in advancing the institutional framework he created.
“A true tribute is not confined to remembrance but in continuing his vision. The NPP has the strength to move forward because of the foundation he laid,” he said, describing the commemoration as a celebration of Sangma’s life and legacy.
Other party leaders, including state office bearers and legislators, attended the programme and reiterated their commitment to carrying forward Sangma’s principles for the welfare of Meghalaya and the wider North Eastern region.
Purno Agitok Sangma, a former Speaker of the Lok Sabha and a prominent tribal leader from Meghalaya, founded the NPP with a focus on regional aspirations, tribal rights and inclusive development.
