Shillong, Mar 10: P. N. Syiem, working president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), resigned from his post and from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress on Tuesday, alleging that the party’s central leadership had ignored the voices and concerns of leaders in Meghalaya.

In a resignation letter addressed to K. C. Venugopal, general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Syiem said he had waited extensively for the national leadership to respond to the opinions and aspirations of the people of Meghalaya.

He stated that there had been repeated calls for a change in the state leadership and a comprehensive revamp of the party organization down to the primary unit level, but claimed these concerns were not acted upon.

Syiem further wrote that it had “become clear that the central leadership at the high command is more focused on criticizing the central government rather than listening to the vital opinions of its own members and the public.”

“Therefore, in accordance with the voices of the people of Meghalaya and most importantly, my own conscience, I hereby tender my resignation… effectively from today, the 10th March 2026,” the letter stated.

Syiem’s resignation comes at a time when the Congress party in Meghalaya has been grappling with internal challenges and efforts to reorganize its state unit following recent political developments in the state.
