SHILLONG, MAR 27: In a major boost to specialised healthcare in the Northeast, the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences has partnered with All India Institute of Medical Sciences to establish a dedicated Burns Unit in Shillong.

The initiative was discussed during a programme on capacity building in burns care held at NEIGRIHMS on Friday. The proposed unit aims to enhance access to advanced burn treatment and improve patient outcomes across Meghalaya and the wider Northeast region.

Addressing senior officials, Prof. Maneesh Singhal, Head of the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at AIIMS New Delhi, outlined the key requirements for setting up a modern, state-of-the-art burns facility. These include appropriate site selection, infrastructure development, skilled manpower, and essential medical equipment.

Experts highlighted that the success of a dedicated burns unit depends on coordinated efforts across multiple departments, including clinical, para-clinical, paramedical, and administrative wings, to ensure comprehensive and integrated patient care.

AIIMS New Delhi has committed to providing long-term support to NEIGRIHMS through structured training programmes, capacity building, manpower development, and collaborative research initiatives in burn management.

The partnership marks a significant step toward strengthening specialised burn care services in the region, addressing a critical healthcare need, and improving survival and recovery outcomes for burn patients across Northeast India.
