SHILLONG, MAR 27: Asian medallist and sailing coach Shilpa Obe Roy has hailed the launch of the Indian Sailing League at Umiam as a major milestone for the sport in the country.

The league, organised by the Umiam Sailing Club, marks its inaugural edition and is being held alongside the 4th North East Regatta at the Water Sports Complex, Umiam, from March 27 to April 6.

Speaking to media persons, Roy described the introduction of a league-format competition as a progressive step for sailing in India, bringing innovative and dynamic race formats.

“The racing structure is very different and exciting. It is the first time such a league is being organised in India, and we are looking forward to a highly competitive and engaging event,” she said.

Roy, who is also serving as team manager of the Mumbai team, expressed confidence in her squad’s preparedness. “Our team is ready to take to the water. We expect a mix of performance, learning, and enjoyment throughout the regatta,” she added.

She further noted that the league has attracted participants from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds, including sailors from across India and abroad. The selection process, she said, ensured a balanced combination of experienced competitors and emerging talent.

Highlighting the broader value of sailing, Roy emphasised its role in building independence, resilience, and decision-making skills. “It is a unique discipline where individuals must understand wind patterns and adapt to constantly changing natural conditions, enhancing both physical endurance and mental strength,” she observed.

With over 25 years of experience, Roy has represented India at international platforms, including the Asian Championships, Asian Games, and World Championships, earning several accolades.

Addressing safety concerns, she clarified that sailing is a well-regulated and skill-intensive sport backed by rigorous training. She added that while she has competed in challenging conditions such as the Arabian Sea, the waters at Umiam are relatively stable, making it an ideal venue for competitive events.

Roy also commended the organisers and local authorities for hosting the event, stating that such initiatives would significantly boost water sports in Meghalaya and inspire greater participation among the youth.
