Shillong, April 8: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has expressed strong concern over the Meghalaya government’s decision to entrust operations of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited in the Mawsynram region to a private entity, Sai Company.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the organisation said the move has triggered widespread apprehension among residents, especially in light of the previous controversy involving Fedco, which allegedly failed to deposit nearly ₹40 crore in electricity payments collected from around 18,000 households.

HITO stated that the incident has raised serious questions about the accountability and reliability of private firms managing essential public services. It further questioned whether the state government had conducted a comprehensive risk assessment before handing over operations to Sai Company.

“The lack of transparency surrounding this decision has led to growing scepticism and distrust among the public,” the organisation said.

Reiterating its stand, HITO asserted that MEECL has the capability and resources to manage operations independently without external oversight. It also raised concerns about the role of engineering officials and the motivations behind the decision to outsource management.

The organisation recalled that it had met the Power Minister on June 22, 2025, urging immediate action against Fedco, including the filing of an FIR for its alleged failure to compensate MEECL. HITO said its primary demand remains the restoration of operational control to MEECL in the Mawsynram division.

Despite repeated engagements with authorities, the organisation expressed disappointment over the lack of action against Fedco. Instead, it alleged that the government’s decision to bring in Sai Company has further eroded public confidence.

HITO has urged the government to reconsider its decision and take necessary corrective measures, warning that continued inaction may lead to public agitation.

The statement was issued by Risingstar Marweiñ, Secretary of HITO Southern Border Area.
