Shillong, Apr 8: Meghalaya U-19 Cricket Team staged a strong comeback with a three-wicket victory over Nagaland U-19 Cricket Team in their Group A match of the NECDC U-19 Men’s One Day Tournament at Sovima on Wednesday.

After suffering a heavy 144-run defeat to Manipur U-19 Cricket Team in their opening match, Meghalaya responded with determination, winning the toss and opting to field first.

The decision paid off, with leg-spinner Mewankitbok Kharpuri delivering a standout performance, claiming an impressive 5/33 in his 10 overs. He was well supported by Benedict Jones Makdoh (2/31), Gaurav Narleng (1/2), and Apandanka Marak (1/25), as Nagaland were bowled out for 167 in 39.5 overs.

For Nagaland, Shyerinlo and Amongti Longkumer top-scored with 36 runs each.

In reply, Meghalaya’s chase got off to a shaky start as they slumped to 22/3. However, Kharpuri once again played a crucial role, this time with the bat, scoring 34 off 44 balls and stitching together a vital 49-run partnership with Angkit Tamang for the fourth wicket.

Tamang contributed a steady 42 off 67 deliveries, guiding the innings closer to the target. Despite a few late hiccups, Rudra Singh Rathore held his nerve with an unbeaten 34 off 27 balls to steer Meghalaya to 170/7 in 29.4 overs.

For his all-round performance, Mewankitbok Kharpuri was deservedly named Player of the Match, playing a pivotal role in Meghalaya’s comeback victory.
