Shillong, April 12: In a significant political development in Meghalaya, senior leader Jemino Mawthoh has resigned from the United Democratic Party (UDP), setting off widespread speculation about his next political move ahead of the 2028 electoral cycle.

Dr. Mawthoh, a long-serving member of the UDP for over two decades and its former General Secretary, cited a lack of purpose in continuing with the party, stating that there was “no meaning in continuing anymore.” His resignation is widely believed to stem from internal differences and growing dissatisfaction with the party’s direction.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has publicly expressed openness to welcoming Mawthoh, reflecting its broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the Northeast by inducting experienced regional leaders. Political observers note that his administrative experience and legislative background could bolster the BJP’s positioning in the state.

In contrast, the Indian National Congress has maintained silence, making no formal approach or public comment on Mawthoh’s possible entry, signaling a cautious approach amid shifting political dynamics.

Despite mounting speculation, Mawthoh has not yet announced his next step. Sources indicate that he is currently consulting with constituents, supporters, and close associates before arriving at a final decision. Known for his measured and strategic approach, he is expected to carefully weigh the long-term implications before making a move.

Political and Academic Background

Dr. Mawthoh has had a notable political career, having been elected twice as MLA from Nongthymmai constituency in 2008 and 2013. He also contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from the Shillong parliamentary seat.

Beyond politics, he is an academic associated with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), where he is respected for his engagement with students and faculty.

Analysts suggest that his eventual decision could influence Meghalaya’s evolving political landscape, particularly as national parties intensify efforts to expand their footprint in the Northeast. While the BJP’s outreach indicates proactive positioning, the Congress’s silence leaves room for further developments.

For now, Mawthoh remains unaffiliated, with his next move likely to shape emerging political narratives in the state.
