Shillong, Apr 27, 2026 — Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Monday attended a high-level meeting in New Delhi convened by Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to discuss the newly launched Urban Challenge Fund (UCF), where he strongly pitched for enhanced support for Shillong’s infrastructure development.

During the meeting, Dhar highlighted the growing urban demands of Shillong, stressing the need for greater central assistance to support the city’s expansion and future potential.

The discussions centred on the Government of India’s Urban Challenge Fund, a major initiative aimed at transforming urban infrastructure, strengthening city planning, and promoting sustainable development across the country.

Officials noted that the scheme is expected to unlock large-scale investments for urban growth and help build more resilient and well-planned cities nationwide.

Representing Meghalaya’s interests, Dhar emphasised the importance of ensuring that Shillong benefits from the initiative, given its strategic and economic significance in the Northeast.

He also assured continued engagement with the Centre to secure meaningful development outcomes for the state.

“We will continue to engage at the national level to bring stronger central support and ensure sustainable urban growth for Meghalaya,” Dhar said.

The Deputy Chief Minister’s participation in the meeting underscores the state government’s focus on improving urban infrastructure and planning to meet the challenges of rapid urbanisation.
