SHILLONG, MAY 22: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong has assured that a site inspection of land near the Old Umshyrpi Bridge for a proposed full-fledged police station will be conducted next week, following detailed talks with the Synjuk Nongsynshar Shnong Upper Shillong on Friday.
Executive member of the Synjuk Arju Dkhar said the Deputy Chief Minister gave the assurance during a meeting that covered key development concerns in Upper Shillong, including the MeECL route, tourism, a college, and drinking water supply.
“The Deputy Chief Minister said that maybe by next week he will schedule an inspection to look at the site because there are many things we need to discuss,” Dkhar told reporters after the meeting.
“He will fix a time to inspect the police station site.”
Dkhar said the demand for a police station at Old Umshyrpi Bridge is long-pending.
“From earlier, we had already decided on the issue of getting a full-fledged police station at the site near the Old Umshyrpi Bridge, along with a Fire Service station, BDO Office and Veterinary Hospital,” he said.
Underscoring the urgency, he added, “We need to bring the Police Station to Old Umshyrpi Bridge to ensure peace and security because, as we have seen, there have been incidents where our youth have been affected. As elders, we have a responsibility.”
While terming Friday’s discussion “very cordial,” Dkhar clarified that it was only an initial round of talks.
“There is no decision yet. He will come next week and then we will get clarity,” he said.
The Synjuk also raised issues related to tourism development, parking to ease traffic flow towards Iewduh, and the handover of unused military land in Lummawbah and Nongskeh.
On the petrol pump matter, Dkhar said only initial discussions were held as it is sub judice. “We do not want to do anything that would attract contempt of court,” he said. Representatives from 14 villages under Upper Shillong were present at the meeting.
