Shillong, May 23: Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals has launched a major awareness initiative on advanced cancer care, robotic surgery, and liver transplantation for people across Eastern and Northeastern India, with specialists stressing the importance of early diagnosis and access to modern treatment technologies.
During an interaction with the media in Guwahati, senior specialists from the hospital shared insights into modern treatment approaches and specialised healthcare services aimed at improving outcomes for patients suffering from cancer and advanced liver diseases.
Dr Rajeev Sharan and Dr Ramdip Ray highlighted that Head and Neck Cancer continues to remain one of the most common cancers in India, particularly in the Northeast region.
The doctors noted that delayed diagnosis and lack of awareness often result in patients seeking treatment only at advanced stages of the disease. They identified tobacco consumption, gutkha, betel nut chewing and alcohol use as major risk factors contributing to the high prevalence of such cancers in the region.
The specialists also discussed the growing role of robotic and minimally invasive surgery in cancer treatment. According to them, these modern surgical techniques help reduce pain, minimise complications, shorten hospital stays and ensure faster recovery for patients.
Speaking on liver disease management, the experts stated that liver transplantation remains the only curative treatment option for patients suffering from liver cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. They also underlined the need for greater public awareness regarding organ donation to support patients requiring transplants.
The doctors emphasised that prevention, timely screening, early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention remain crucial in reducing the burden of cancer and advanced liver diseases across the Northeast.
