SHILLONG, JUNE 1: The Khasi Students’ Union Delhi Unit has rescued two young women from Barato, Meghalaya, after they were allegedly brought to Delhi on false job promises and pressured into prostitution.

In a statement issued on Monday, the KSU said the women contacted the unit on May 31 seeking urgent assistance.

“The girls alleged that they had been brought to Delhi on the assurance that employment would be arranged for them in a hotel. However, upon reaching Delhi, they were allegedly pressured to engage in prostitution,” the KSU said.

According to the women, when they refused, the woman who brought them demanded reimbursement of travel expenses and confiscated their mobile phones.

“The girls further alleged that they were not being allowed to leave until the money spent on their travel was repaid,” the statement said.

The KSU Delhi Unit immediately informed Delhi Police. “Acting promptly, the police located and detained the woman concerned for questioning,” the KSU said.

During inquiry, the woman denied all allegations. “She stated that the girls had voluntarily come to Delhi in search of employment and that she had paid for their travel expenses to assist them in securing jobs. She further denied any involvement in forcing or attempting to force the girls into prostitution,” the KSU said.

Following police intervention, the woman was directed to return the mobile phones. “Thereafter, the girls were safely handed over to the care and custody of the KSU Delhi Unit,” the statement said.

Both women are now under the protection of the KSU Delhi Unit, with arrangements made for their return home. “The family members of one of the girls have already arranged and sent the necessary funds for her airfare, and she is scheduled to return to Meghalaya tomorrow,” the KSU said.

The union reiterated its commitment to safeguarding students and youth from Meghalaya outside the state.

“The KSU Delhi Unit urges all job seekers to exercise caution while accepting employment offers from unknown individuals and to verify the authenticity of such opportunities before travelling,” it said.
