Nongpoh, June 7: Downgate Football Club of Ri Bhoi district scripted another memorable achievement by emerging champions of the 2nd Youth Development Football League 2026 All India Invitation Football Championship, held at Hajo Mini Stadium in Assam and concluding on June 4.
Coached by David Marwein, the Nongpoh-based side successfully defended their title, making it two consecutive championships in the prestigious U-15 tournament.
The competition, organized by the Ri Han Axel Foundation, brought together football clubs and academies from across the Northeastern states, providing a platform for some of the region’s most promising young talents.
After progressing through the tournament with a series of impressive performances, Downgate FC faced Shillong-based PFR Club, one of Meghalaya’s well-known football academies, in the final.
The championship clash proved to be a highly competitive affair, with both teams displaying skill, discipline and determination throughout regulation time. Unable to be separated after a hard-fought contest, the match was eventually decided through a penalty shootout, where Downgate FC held their nerve to secure victory and retain the title.
The triumph is particularly noteworthy considering the challenges faced by the club, which continues to develop young players despite limited infrastructure and the absence of a dedicated training ground. Under the guidance of coach David Marwein, the team has nevertheless continued to produce outstanding performances at the grassroots level.
Adding to the club’s celebrations, goalkeeper Wanshan Thabah was adjudged the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament for his exceptional displays between the posts.
Downgate FC’s latest success further underlines the growing football talent emerging from Ri Bhoi district and highlights the club’s commitment to nurturing young players capable of competing at the highest levels of youth football in the region.
