Shillong, June 11: Former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament W.R. Kharlukhi has stressed that while governments often formulate well-intentioned policies, their true success depends on effective implementation and the delivery of tangible benefits to the people.
Speaking to media persons in Shillong on Thursday, Kharlukhi said that policies should not remain confined to official documents or government offices but must translate into meaningful action on the ground. He emphasised that development initiatives and welfare programmes can only achieve their intended objectives when they are implemented efficiently and reach the citizens they are designed to serve.
According to Kharlukhi, proper execution of policies is essential for improving livelihoods, strengthening public services, and enhancing the overall quality of life of the people.
The former parliamentarian also underscored the importance of preserving and promoting indigenous languages and cultural heritage. He said native languages form an integral part of a community’s identity and must be nurtured and safeguarded to ensure they are passed on to future generations.
Commenting on democratic governance, Kharlukhi noted that democracy functions according to the will and aspirations of the people. He said elected representatives have a responsibility to act with accountability, integrity, and commitment, focusing on addressing public concerns rather than pursuing narrow political or personal interests.
He further observed that coalition governments require cooperation, mutual understanding, and constructive engagement among political parties. According to him, dialogue and consensus-building are vital for maintaining stable governance and ensuring sustained development.
Concluding his remarks, Kharlukhi expressed hope that policymakers and elected representatives would continue to place the welfare of the people at the centre of their decision-making and focus on implementing policies that can bring meaningful and lasting change to society.
