Shillong, June 27: Shillong Traffic Police booked 80 traffic violations and collected Rs 81,500 in fines during a coordinated night enforcement drive across the city as part of its ongoing efforts to achieve zero road fatalities.

The multi-point naka checking operation was conducted on the night of June 26 by Shillong Traffic Police personnel and the Special Operation Team under Operation Safer Shillong, with members of the Laitumkhrah Dorbar also participating.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the drive focused on curbing drunken driving, illegal vehicle modifications, and other traffic violations.

According to the SP, motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol were prevented from continuing their journey.

“Drivers found under the influence of alcohol were not allowed to continue driving and were released only after a responsible person arrived to take them home safely,” Syiem said.

He stated that the enforcement operation forms part of a regular weekend initiative aimed at improving road safety by strictly enforcing traffic regulations and reducing accidents.

“Weekend enforcement drives will continue regularly under Operation Safer Shillong,” Syiem said, adding that the objective is to promote responsible driving and ensure greater compliance with traffic rules.

The East Khasi Hills police have set an ambitious goal of making Shillong a “Zero Road Fatality City” through sustained enforcement, public awareness, and stricter compliance with road safety regulations.
