SHILLONG, JUL 9: Minister in-charge Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Sanbor Shullai has asked the Border Security Force (BSF) to launch an immediate crackdown on alleged cattle smuggling in West Garo Hills, following reports of illegal transportation of cattle to the Bangladesh border.
In a letter to BSF Meghalaya Frontier IG OP Upadhyay, Shullai flagged media reports about unchecked illegal transport of cattle from Assam to Bangladesh border via West Garo Hills and sought urgent intervention by border outposts.
“It is urgently requested that the BSF Outposts and their Personnel who are our guardians and sentinels on the border may kindly be immediately pressed into action and instructed to take strong measures in checking the above illegal actions,” the Minister wrote.
He cited specific corridors mentioned in the reports, stating they “allegedly pass and transit through Chibinang & Tura and onwards to Chirangpara”.
The letter also alleged widespread smuggling and animal cruelty along these routes.
Shullai asked the IG to keep him informed of action taken in the matter.
