SHILLONG, JUL 21: The Hynniewtrep Youth’ Council Education Cell on Tuesday condemned the President of the BJP Meghalaya Youth Wing over an alleged statement calling for peaceful protesters in New Delhi to be “shot.”

In a press release, the HYC said the remark, if true, is a “dangerous incitement to violence” and undermines democratic values and constitutional rights. 

“Calling for bullets instead of dialogue is the language of authoritarianism, not democracy. Dissent is not a crime and peaceful protest is protected under Article 19,” the council stated.

The HYC demanded that BJP Meghalaya clarify its stand, initiate disciplinary action against the leader, and issue an unconditional apology. 

It also urged authorities to examine if the statement amounts to an offence under law.

“No individual, irrespective of political affiliation, should be above the law,” the statement added.
