Shillong, August 6: Voice of the People Party (VPP) candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election, Dr. Batskhem Marboh, on Thursday expressed confidence that the party will retain the trust of the people and emerge victorious in the election.
Dr. Marboh, who joined the VPP’s peaceful march to the Meghalaya Secretariat led by VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit to protest the functioning of the MDA government led by the National People’s Party (NPP), said the party’s strength lies in its principles and the unwavering support of its followers.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Marboh said the VPP is not intimidated by electoral competition and remains focused on its vision and commitment to the people.
“We are confident of winning the election. The support that VPP enjoys is not based on personalities but on the people’s understanding of the party’s principles, policies and programmes, and our commitment to safeguarding the interests of the people of Meghalaya,” he said.
He noted that since its formation in 2021, the VPP has witnessed significant growth and has secured victories in several elections, reflecting what he described as increasing public confidence in the party.
“The growth of the VPP over the last few years speaks for itself. Our electoral successes demonstrate the credibility and strength of the party,” Dr. Marboh added.
Responding to questions about other candidates in the by-election, he said the VPP is not concerned about its rivals but is focused on reaching out to voters and highlighting issues affecting the people of the state.
Dr. Marboh also dismissed claims regarding the turnout at the party’s public gatherings, describing some estimates as exaggerated. He maintained that the VPP does not mobilise supporters through financial incentives and that those attending its meetings do so voluntarily.
“We do not want to exaggerate numbers. Let the result of the Lok Sabha by-election speak for itself. People attend our meetings out of their own conviction, not because they are paid or provided with any financial assistance,” he said.
On democracy and politics, Dr. Marboh said both are continuous processes that rely on public trust and legitimacy, adding that political engagement must remain centred on democratic institutions.
He further said that while the VPP would continue preparing for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election, it would also persist in pressing the state government to respond to the issues raised by the party during its march to the Secretariat.
“The issues we have raised are significant to the people of Meghalaya. It is the responsibility of the government to respond to them. At the same time, the VPP will continue working among the people as we prepare for the by-election,” Dr. Marboh said.
