Shillong, August 10: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Laban Circle, through its Education Cell, has demanded the introduction of Khasi as a subject at the Laban Bengalee Boys Higher Secondary School and Laban Bengalee Girls Higher Secondary School.

A delegation of the Education Cell, led by Chairman K. Nelson Wanrap and Secretary Andrew P. Kharbithai, met the principals of both schools on Monday to raise the demand.

According to the KSU, the demand follows complaints from parents who expressed concern that their children are unable to continue studying Khasi, despite the language being indigenous to Meghalaya.

The Union pointed out that although both institutions have been functioning for more than 100 years, it was regrettable that Khasi has still not been introduced as a subject.

KSU Laban Circle has therefore urged not only the two institutions but also all schools in the Laban area that do not currently offer Khasi to introduce the language as one of their subjects.

The Union maintained that introducing Khasi would provide local students with an opportunity to continue learning their mother tongue and ensure that children studying in schools within the state are not deprived of the opportunity to study Khasi.

The KSU further emphasised the importance of promoting and preserving the Khasi language through the education system, particularly among younger generations.
