SHILLONG, AUG 13: The Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday approved a draft resolution opposing uranium mining in the state.The resolution will be tabled in the Assembly’s Autumn Session beginning August 24, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said.
Speaking to the media after the cabinet meeting, Sangma said the government’s stand on the issue is clear and firm.
“The cabinet has approved the draft resolution against the mining of uranium in the state of Meghalaya which will be moved in the upcoming autumn session of 2026, which will start on the 24th of this month. So, the resolution was cleared by the cabinet today,” he said.
Asked about calls from anti-uranium groups to shut the Atomic Minerals Directorate office in Shillong, the Chief Minister said the priority now is to get the Assembly resolution passed.
“All of this is the intent of the government but right now as I said the resolution is very clear that we have appeal to the government of India that any form of mining or any kind of activity in relation to uranium, should not be done in the state of Meghalaya,” Sangma said.
He added that further action will follow once the resolution is adopted.”So once that is moved, then obviously all steps from our side in every possible way to ensure that none of these activities takes place, all efforts will be made from our side,” he said.
