Shillong, August 18: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawprem Circle and Upper Shillong Circle on Tuesday detained a group of people suspected by the organisation to be outsiders at Umshyrpi and questioned them about their place of residence and reasons for staying in the area.

According to the KSU, the group was questioned about whether they had come to Meghalaya for employment, business or other purposes and was asked to produce relevant documents to establish their identity and reason for residing in the area.

The Union claimed that the individuals were unable to provide documents that, in its view, adequately established their circumstances. Following the questioning, KSU members handed the individuals over to the Jhalupara Police Outpost for further verification and inquiry.

The KSU said the action was prompted by concerns over the alleged entry and settlement of people from outside the state without proper documentation.

The organisation maintained that the presence of individuals entering the state without legitimate employment or other verifiable reasons could pose challenges to Meghalaya and called for proper verification by the authorities.

The matter has now been handed over to the police for further inquiry and verification of the individuals’ identities and circumstances.
