Shillong, September 18, 2026: Two persons have been arrested in connection with the Urkaliar incident in which Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, Lovish Garg, IPS, sustained serious injuries after allegedly being hit by a scooty during a naka checking operation.

Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dr. Harry Prasanta, IPS, said the incident occurred at around 1:30 am when police personnel were conducting a special naka checking operation.

According to the police, a scooty carrying two men allegedly attempted to evade the checkpoint despite being directed to stop. When Garg intervened and signalled the vehicle to halt, the rider allegedly accelerated and struck the officer.

Garg sustained injuries to several parts of his body, including his head and legs, and required stitches. He was subsequently taken to Woodland Hospital for treatment.

Dr. Prasanta said both individuals were arrested and booked under provisions relating to attempt to murder, disobedience of an order issued by a public servant, and voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a public servant while discharging official duties.

The scooty was also seized, and further investigation is underway.

Police said a medical examination found that both accused had consumed alcohol. While this may have been a factor in their alleged attempt to evade the checkpoint, police are still investigating the precise circumstances and motive behind the incident.

On reports linking the two accused with the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Dr. Prasanta clarified that their alleged association with the organisation remains a matter of suspicion and has not been established.

He urged the public not to draw conclusions regarding their affiliation until the investigation is completed and sufficient evidence is gathered.

The two accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
