Shillong, September 19, 2026: As many as 127 youth received appointment letters at the 20th Rozgar Mela held at the State Convention Centre in Shillong on Saturday.
The Rozgar Mela was organised simultaneously at 45 locations across the country, with more than 51,000 appointment letters distributed to newly recruited candidates for various government posts. With this edition, the cumulative number of beneficiaries under the Rozgar Mela initiative has reached around 12.75 lakh, according to the Press Information Bureau.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita attended the Shillong programme, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the newly appointed candidates through video conferencing.
The 127 recruits from Shillong will join various government departments and organisations, including the Income Tax Department, Indian Railways and India Post.
Addressing the gathering, Margherita congratulated the newly appointed youth and their families. He said the appointment letters marked not only the beginning of their careers but also a journey of public service, responsibility and nation-building.
The Union Minister highlighted the potential of the Northeast, saying improved connectivity and infrastructure were creating opportunities for young people to study, work, innovate and build their futures in the region.
He also stressed that the development of the Northeast was closely linked to the development of the country and urged the recruits to serve with dedication, integrity and a strong sense of public responsibility.
During his address, Prime Minister Modi congratulated the recruits and their families, acknowledging the efforts of the candidates and the sacrifices made by their parents.
He said young people entering government service would have an important role in contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Modi urged the new recruits to keep citizens and their aspirations at the centre of their work and ensure that government decisions help remove obstacles and create opportunities.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s expanding startup and entrepreneurship ecosystem, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, along with initiatives related to skill development, apprenticeships and employment generation.
He stressed the importance of transparent and accessible recruitment processes, including examinations in regional languages and greater choice of examination centres.
Modi also highlighted Mission Karmayogi, stating that more than 1.72 crore users have registered under the programme for continuous learning and capacity building.
Emphasising citizen-centric governance, he called upon the new recruits to continuously upgrade their skills and understand emerging technologies and systems.
Invoking the principle of “Nagarik Devo Bhava”, the Prime Minister said service to citizens was service to the nation and urged the recruits to discharge their responsibilities with dedication, sensitivity, efficiency and honesty.
The Shillong programme was organised by the Office of the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Shillong.
Among those present were Darzakhum Songate, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Shillong; Ningreirum Longvah, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, North East Region; and K. Meghanath Chowhan, Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Shillong, along with newly appointed candidates and officials from various government departments.
