Jowai, September 20, 2026: Members of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Jowai Circle, on Sunday apprehended three persons suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals and handed them over to Jowai Police Station for verification and necessary legal action.

According to a complaint filed by Bocheru Mi Pohsnem, Education Secretary of the JSU Central Body and Adviser to the JSU Jowai Circle, the three individuals were travelling in a white Suzuki tourist vehicle bearing registration number ML 04 E 3485 when they were intercepted at Lad Demthring.

The JSU alleged that during preliminary questioning and document verification, the three individuals claimed to be Bangladeshi nationals who had entered India illegally. However, their nationality and immigration status remain subject to verification by the police and other competent authorities.

The Union also alleged that unidentified brokers approached its members after the interception and offered money in exchange for releasing the three persons. The JSU said its members rejected the offer and instead took the individuals to Jowai Police Station.

In its complaint, the JSU urged police to register a case under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and other applicable laws. It also sought an investigation into the vehicle’s owner and driver to determine whether they were involved in transporting undocumented foreign nationals.

The Union further demanded that the alleged brokers be identified and investigated, along with any wider network suspected of facilitating illegal cross-border movement.

Police confirmation regarding the identities and nationality of the three individuals, as well as details of any formal case registered in connection with the matter, was awaited at the time of filing this report.
