Nongpoh, September 22, 2026: Ringku Muni R. Marak, Vice-President of the All Khasi Hills A’chik Federation (AKHAF), Maikhuli Unit, has emerged as a prominent voice among residents opposing alleged attempts to interfere with land in Maikhuli amid the ongoing interstate border dispute.
Marak was among the women who confronted Assam Police and government officials during a recent incident near the Maikhuli football ground and school. She alleged that Assam authorities had entered the area and attempted to interfere with land traditionally owned and occupied by local residents.
According to Marak, she immediately informed Meghalaya Police personnel stationed at Khanapara about the presence of the Assam authorities. However, she alleged that the response from the Meghalaya side was inadequate, leaving residents, particularly women, to confront the situation themselves.
“We are not trying to create trouble. We are protecting the land inherited from our forefathers,” Marak said while speaking to the media.
She said the villagers could not remain silent if their land, identity and future were under threat. She maintained that the residents would not allow any authority to take possession of any part of Maikhuli’s territory.
Marak also criticised the Meghalaya Government, alleging that border communities have not received adequate protection. She called for the immediate deployment of Meghalaya Police personnel in Maikhuli and urged the State Government to clearly establish and protect its jurisdiction over the area.
She further appealed to the Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo communities to remain united in protecting Meghalaya’s territory, saying the Maikhuli issue concerns not only one village but also the land and rights of people living along the interstate boundary.
Marak said she would continue to stand with the residents and would not be deterred by pressure or intimidation.
She maintained that the people of Maikhuli want peace but will remain united in protecting the land they say was inherited from their ancestors.
