Shillong, September 26, 2026: HSPDP legislator and Cabinet Minister Methodius Dkhar has reaffirmed his party’s support for the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), saying the NPP-led government remains stable despite the recent defection of eight UDP legislators to the BJP.

Dkhar, the MLA from Mawshynrut and Minister in charge of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, said the HSPDP continues to have faith in Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and remains committed to its decision to support the government.

He said the party had taken the decision after detailed discussions and intends to stand by it for the remainder of the present term.

Addressing speculation that the political realignment could destabilise the government, Dkhar said there was no immediate threat to the MDA administration.

“There are many narratives and considerable confusion among the people, with some suggesting that the government may collapse. I want to assure the people that the government remains strong. As of now, there is no threat of its collapse,” he said.

Dkhar said he was satisfied with the functioning of the coalition and maintained that the government had made sincere efforts to address issues affecting the state and improve its economy.

He also stressed that the HSPDP would not compromise on its principles, regardless of whether it was part of the government or in the Opposition.

“Our party’s aims and objectives will always remain intact. We will neither change nor compromise our stand. Whether we are in the government or outside it, we will continue to uphold our ideology and raise matters concerning the people and the state,” he said.

On whether the BJP’s growing presence could lead to greater influence over the government, Dkhar declined to speculate, saying every political party has its own objectives and strategy.

On development and governance, the minister said progress required collective responsibility, with the state government, the Centre, ministers, departments and other stakeholders all playing their respective roles.

Dkhar added that his primary responsibility remained serving the people, both as a minister and as an elected representative.

“As long as the government entrusts me with ministerial responsibility, I will discharge it wholeheartedly for the welfare of the people. Even when my tenure as a minister ends, I will continue working as an MLA for my constituency and the state,” he said.
