Shillong, September 28, 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s strength in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has increased from two to 10 MLAs following the entry of eight United Democratic Party legislators, triggering speculation over a possible redistribution of Cabinet berths in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.

The political realignment has brought Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s coalition management strategy into focus, particularly regarding ministerial representation among the alliance partners. However, no formal announcement has been made regarding a Cabinet reshuffle or changes in the allocation of portfolios.

The UDP, which previously had 12 MLAs, has been reduced to four, while the BJP has emerged as the second-largest party in the 60-member Assembly, behind the National People’s Party (NPP). The eight legislators joined the BJP in New Delhi on September 23, significantly altering the political arithmetic within the ruling coalition.

BJP’s Cabinet Ambitions and UDP’s Position

Before the political realignment, the UDP held two Cabinet berths, while the BJP had one representative in the Council of Ministers. Sanbor Shullai currently holds the portfolios of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Arts and Culture, Legal Metrology, and Printing and Stationery.

The BJP’s increased legislative strength has fuelled speculation that the party could seek greater representation in the Cabinet. Reports have suggested that additional ministerial berths may be sought, although the precise number of positions under discussion, if any, remains unconfirmed.

Attention has also turned to Lahkmen Rymbui, who held several ministerial portfolios, including Education, Information and Public Relations, Law, and Revenue and Disaster Management, before joining the BJP. His future ministerial role remains a subject of political discussion.

Former minister Kyrmen Shylla, who also moved from the UDP to the BJP, has been mentioned in speculation surrounding possible Cabinet changes. Reports have further raised questions about whether UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh could retain his ministerial position. However, no official decision has been announced on the matter.

Any Cabinet reshuffle would involve balancing the BJP’s increased legislative strength with the interests of the UDP and other coalition partners.

Government Stability and Coalition Arithmetic

The BJP’s expanded presence has altered the internal balance of the ruling alliance, but the development has not, by itself, resulted in an immediate change in government.

The central issue now concerns how the coalition partners will adjust to the changed political composition and whether the new arrangement will lead to changes in ministerial representation, portfolios or responsibilities.

For the UDP, the departure of eight legislators represents a substantial reduction in its Assembly strength and organisational presence. The four remaining MLAs are Metbah Lyngdoh, Paul Lyngdoh, Nujorki Sungoh and Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar.

The reduced numbers could affect the party’s bargaining position within the coalition, while raising questions about its leadership, organisational unity and preparations for the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections.

There has also been speculation that some of the remaining UDP legislators could consider other political options, including the NPP. These reports remain unconfirmed, and no further movement has been officially announced.

Meanwhile, the formal recognition of the political realignment remains subject to the Assembly Speaker’s examination of the documents submitted by the legislators. Assembly Adviser Andrew Simons said on September 25 that the documents relating to the merger had been submitted to Speaker Thomas A. Sangma for scrutiny.

The coming weeks may provide greater clarity on the implications of the BJP’s increased strength, the distribution of Cabinet responsibilities and the UDP’s position within the MDA government. Until official decisions are announced, speculation over individual ministerial positions and a possible reshuffle remains unconfirmed.
