Shillong, September 29, 2026: Meghalaya Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai on Tuesday accused the Congress and its INDIA bloc partners of spreading misinformation about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, asserting that the exercise was necessary to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a BJP joining programme, Shullai alleged that the Congress was attempting to create public fear by questioning the credibility of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and portraying the electoral roll revision exercise negatively.
He appealed to the people of Meghalaya, where the electoral roll revision process is underway, not to be influenced by what he described as misleading propaganda by the Congress and its allies.
“The Congress and its INDIA bloc partners have been manufacturing lies to mislead the people of the country and create panic,” Shullai said, urging residents to approach the exercise without being influenced by political allegations.
Shullai maintained that the SIR was necessary to prevent ineligible individuals, including alleged illegal immigrants, from being enrolled as voters in Meghalaya. He also referred to Form 6, which eligible citizens can use to apply for inclusion in the electoral roll, claiming that the procedure had undergone judicial scrutiny and had been upheld by the Supreme Court.
The minister further accused the Congress of repeatedly questioning the Election Commission, electronic voting machines and other national institutions following electoral defeats. He also alleged that the party had cast doubts on the armed forces, the country’s defence capabilities and the office of the National Security Adviser.
According to Shullai, such criticism of constitutional and national institutions could create confusion among the public and undermine confidence in democratic processes.
He claimed that the Congress and its allies had lost public support in Meghalaya and accused them of attempting to undermine the people’s mandate through misinformation.
Shullai also expressed confidence that the BJP would continue to expand its political presence in Meghalaya, asserting that more people would support the party in the coming years.
He urged residents to cooperate with the electoral roll revision process and rely on verified information rather than political allegations.
