Shillong, Sept 30: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said infiltration from Bangladesh is happening almost daily, but those detected are mostly ordinary citizens fleeing the turmoil there, and not elements trying to create law and order problems.

“I called a meeting of the BSF and police and we discussed the issue of infiltration which is taking place almost every day and we have instructed both the police and BSF to be more active on the ground so that we will make sure that infiltration does not take place,” Tynsong told reporters.

On the seriousness of the issue, he said, “It is not the question of seriousness. We all know the situation in Bangladesh. Most of the citizens, it seems, they wanted to come out of Bangladesh. It is the real issue. It is not because they want to infiltrate for any kind of creating law and order, it is not like that. Most of them whom we detected, we found out it is ordinary citizens of Bangladesh, they wanted to come out of their own country maybe to live somewhere else.”

He said detailed deliberations have taken place and instructions issued to all agencies.

“That also we discussed in detail but I will not be able to tell you much. So we already discussed and instructions have been given to police force, district administration and also to BSF,” he said.

Tynsong attributed infiltration to unfenced and porous stretches in East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills and suspected involvement of middlemen.

“There are so many issues. As far as East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills is concerned, as you can see we still have uncovered fencing, so it seems from those places which are porous and accessibility is very poor, they take advantage of it. And I cannot rule out the possibility of some kind of dalal or some kind of agent who does not think in a bigger way, they just thought about their petty business, so that is also there,” he said.

“We are on track,” he added.
