Shillong, October 6: The travelling edition of the “Climate Festival of Life: Where the Rivers, Forests, Mountains, Coasts and Oceans Are!” began at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) campus in Shillong on October 5.
The five-day national climate festival, being held at the Multi-Use Convention Hall, NEHU, will continue until October 9. It is organised by Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, in collaboration with the Department of Geography, NEHU.
Designed as a youth-focused platform, the festival aims to make climate science more engaging and accessible while highlighting the diversity of India’s ecosystems and the relationship between climate change, natural landscapes and human livelihoods.
The festival combines art, culture and science, featuring student research exhibits, interactive installations and expert-led talks on contemporary environmental issues.
The programme also includes guided nature walks, environmental film screenings and cultural performances, offering students, educators and members of the public an opportunity to engage with climate and environmental concerns through different forms of learning.
Schools, colleges and local organisations from Shillong and surrounding areas are participating in the festival, with the objective of promoting environmental awareness and encouraging young people to take a greater role in environmental stewardship.
Speaking on the importance of youth participation in climate action, Prof. P. K. Ryngnga, Head of the Department of Geography, NEHU, said young people coming together can become a strong driving force for the urgent learning and conservation efforts required to protect the planet.
Following its programme at NEHU, the travelling festival will move to other locations across the Northeast and different parts of India, carrying its message of climate awareness, conservation and environmental stewardship to wider audiences.
NEHU said it remains committed to promoting environmental awareness, interdisciplinary learning and meaningful youth engagement towards building a sustainable and climate-resilient future.
