Shillong, October 7: MDA spokesperson and NPP leader Wailadmiki Shylla on Wednesday said all 33 NPP MLAs remained united under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, dismissing speculation of internal differences within the party.

Shylla was speaking to reporters following the NPP legislators’ meeting held at the Chief Minister’s official residence on Tuesday evening. He said the meeting was part of the party’s regular practice of bringing its legislators together to discuss governance, development and political matters. Reports also confirmed that all 33 NPP MLAs attended the meeting.

He said there was nothing unusual about the meeting and rejected suggestions that it was convened because of recent political developments or concerns within the party.

Shylla said political realignments and changes in party affiliation were part of politics, adding that the recent movement of legislators had taken place within the ruling coalition rather than from the government to the Opposition.

He dismissed suggestions of a rift between NPP legislators and the party leadership, saying the party had remained united despite recurring speculation about internal differences.

Shylla also expressed confidence in Sangma’s leadership and the functioning of the government. He referred to the previous MDA government, when several parties were part of the coalition, and said the government had managed to work together despite differing political interests.

The remarks came amid recent political changes in Meghalaya, including the movement of eight UDP MLAs to the BJP. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has also dismissed reports of NPP legislators planning to join the BJP and maintained that the NPP’s 33 MLAs remain intact.

On issues requiring a decision from the party’s senior leadership, Shylla declined to comment, saying such matters would have to be considered at the appropriate level.

He reiterated that the NPP remained united under Sangma’s leadership.
