St Joseph’s Secondary School, Laitkor Celebrates Centenary

Shillong, October 8: St Joseph’s Secondary School, Laitkor, East Khasi Hills, celebrated its centenary year, marking 100 years of the institution’s contribution to education in the region.

The school, established in 1926, organised a special programme to honour and felicitate its teachers, former teachers and past pupils. The event was attended by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui as the Chief Guest, along with MLA A.L. Hek, Fr Francis Kharpran, teachers, former teachers, parents and students.

The programme featured student performances and reflections on the school’s century-long journey and its contribution to education.

Addressing the gathering, Rymbui said education should not be viewed merely as a means of securing a government job but as a tool to face life’s challenges and become self-reliant.

He also stressed the importance of identifying and developing individual talents alongside formal education. The Minister highlighted various initiatives of the Meghalaya Government aimed at providing young people with opportunities to develop skills and encouraged students to explore their abilities.

Rymbui said no work should be considered inferior or superior and urged students to recognise the value of different skills and professions.

He also called upon teachers to continuously update their knowledge and undergo retraining in response to changes in society and advancements in technology.

As Guest of Honour, Hek praised the founders of the institution for bringing education to Laitkor and encouraged students to work hard, remain resilient in the face of challenges and understand their own strengths and potential.

The centenary celebration marked a significant milestone in the history of St Joseph’s Secondary School, honouring its legacy while encouraging the present generation to carry forward its commitment to education and service.
