Shillong, October 10: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Saturday announced the party’s target of winning 32 seats in the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections, while stating that it would seek public support on the strength of its principles.
Basaiawmoit was addressing a public rally at Madan Polo in Shillong organised to mobilise support for Dr Batskhem Marboh, the VPP candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election.
The rally began with a moment of silence in memory of the late Dr Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, whose demise left the parliamentary seat vacant.
The gathering drew thousands of supporters who assembled to hear the party’s leadership and candidate outline their priorities ahead of the by-election.
Addressing the gathering, Basaiawmoit stressed that the party would approach voters on the basis of its principles as it seeks to expand its support base across Meghalaya. He also set the target of winning 32 seats in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in the 2028 elections.
The target would give the party a majority in the Assembly and the opportunity to form the next government if achieved.
Basaiawmoit also reaffirmed the party’s support for Dr Marboh as its candidate for the Lok Sabha by-election and urged voters to back him.
In his address, Dr Marboh outlined the issues he intends to prioritise during the election campaign and appealed to the electorate to support his candidature and send him to the Lok Sabha.
The rally served as a platform for the VPP to mobilise support for the upcoming parliamentary by-election while outlining its longer-term electoral ambitions ahead of the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections.
