Shillong, Nov 6: The Khasi-Jaintia Presbyterian (KJP) Synod Sepngi said that Aadhaar enrolment should be based on people’s decision.
“Our stand is very clear that Aadhaar enrolment will entirely depends on the people and it will be their individual decision if they want to do it or not, as per the Supreme Court order,” Rev W.C. Khongwir, chairman of Synod’s Social and Economic Life Development Department (SELDD) told reporters at a press conference here on Monday.
On people’s perception about the 12-digitnumber, he said that the Synod right from 2015 had circulated a letter to all its units urging them not to link Aadhaar with the number of the beast “666” which is from the Bible.
“We have clarified in the letter circulated to all units of the Church that there is no connection and that they should not link Aadhaar with the 666 from the Bible,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Social and Economic Life Development Department (SELDD) is all set to organize the “Festival of Peace” at Lyngktop Field, Mawphlang on December 2.
Announcing this, Khongwir said the festival aimed at further strengthening the bonds of friendship and understanding within the diverse communities in the state.
“The objective is to also bring together the whole Khasi community irrespective of the diverse faith systems prevailing within the community to usher in a sense of unity, security and happiness within the community and to promote the sense and feeling of unity among diverse sections of the community,” he said.
According to him, the festival will also look into how the indigenous people, can strengthen, revive, preserve and cultivate the lessons; the life styles, the culture and world view handed down by forefathers.
“Amalgamating the lessons of past with prospects of the future through imperatives of the present is the end objective of this Festival of Peace,” he added.
The festival will features arts exhibition, performances of traditional musical instruments by the Assembly Institute of Music, traditional dance by the Seng Khasi (Seng Kmie) and Seiñ Raij besides traditional skit by Catholic Church, dress show, phawar Khasi and others.
