Shillong, Feb 03: Congress president, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday visited veteran Congress leader and former president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, D.D. Lapang who is undergoing treatment in New Delhi.

Gandhi spent sometimes with the veteran leader and enquired about his health. The AICC chief wished him a speedy recovery.

Lapang who had opted out to contest from Nongpoh constituency in the February 27 polls considering his age and health was indisposed for sometimes and still under treatment.

However political rivals took advantage of Lapang’s decision not to contest the Assembly polls by claiming that senior Congress leaders like Lapang and others opting out of the polls was a sign that the Congress would be rejected by the people of Meghalaya, and it would face defeat in the upcoming elections.

Lapang who had taken oath five times as chief minister of Meghalaya, will turn 84 on April 10 this year.

Lapang had represented Nongpoh constituency since 1972.
