Shillong, Apr 12: The Congress in Meghalaya will launch a statewide protest against the idea of issuing work permit to Bangladeshi nationals.

The idea was floated recently during a meeting between Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Union External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi while discussing about Act East Policy.

Leader of the Opposition in Meghalaya Assembly, Mukul Sangma told reporters at Congress Bhavan here on Thursday that the protest will start from Saturday onwards as “the people of Meghalaya cannot accept this idea and it is also a concern being shared by other States in the Northeast.”

The protest will be held in Shillong, the State capital and Mendipathar in North Garo Hills on Saturday, where Mukul will join the protest at Mendipathar.

Questioning the intention of Chief Minister for coming up with such an idea of issuing work permit to foreign nationals, Mukul asked, “Are we not aware of the fact that there is enough work force in the State and our youths have to move out of the State looking for job opportunities?”

He said that the Congress will not allow this idea and continue to voice out opposition for the interest of the people of the state.
