Shillong, Apr 19: The Maitshaphrang has urged the Meghalaya government to ensure effective implementation of the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012.
In a memorandum submitted to chief minister Conrad K Sangma here on Thursday, Maitshaphrang convenor, Michael N. Syiem said, “We urge you to ensure that the law is implemented in letter and spirit and that all departments make it mandatory that a marriage registration certificate is furnished for all official purposes.â€
Syiem reminded that the primary objective of the Act is to deal with the increasing number of single parents abandoned by their husbands without giving any maintenance for the welfare and upkeep of the children resulting in numerous problems in the society like high rate of school dropouts, juvenile crimes and others.
